William Samuel Enloe

William Samuel Enloe, 88, of Edneyville passed away unexpectedly Wednesday, March 3, 2021. A lifelong resident of Edneyville, he was the son of the late Willie J. and Elsie Nesbitt Enloe. He graduated from Edneyville High School in 1951. In 1955, he graduated from North Carolina State University with a major in horticulture supplemented by business courses. While in college, he was a member of Alpha Zeta, Golden Chain, Agricultural Club, vice-president of the Horticultural Club, Editor of The Agriculturalist, served as Captain in the Army ROTC, and was awarded the Horticultural Cup. After serving in the US Army, he returned to the family farm in Edneyville and began to practice what he had learned at North Carolina State.

He planted the fi rst large block of apple trees on dwarf rootstock in the state. He was involved in introducing new varieties of apples to the area, expanding the market and utilizing the most current horticultural practices throughout his career. He was a partner in North State Orchards with his brother, Boyce Enloe, and brother-in-law, Bob Lancaster. William oversaw the planning and construction of a modern packing and cold storage facility. In 1984, North State Orchards installed the first computerized color sorter and sizer in the state.

He was a member of the Blue Ridge Apple Growers Association and served as President. He was an Honorary Life Member and served as President of the North Carolina Apple Growers Association. In 2000, he was inducted into the Western North Carolina Agricultural Hall of Fame. William was named 2005 College Agricultural and Life Sciences Outstanding Alumnus at North Carolina State University. In 2006, he received the Evelyn Hill NC Apple Grower of the Year for Outstanding Contributions to the Apple Industry. He was a charter member, Eagle Scout, board member and institutional representative of Boy Scout Troop 605 and served on the board of the Daniel Boone Council. William was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Edneyville.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his son, Alan Walter Enloe; and his older brother, Boyce Enloe.

He is survived by his loving wife, Elizabeth Freeman Enloe; son William “Bill” Scott Enloe (Yamina) of Belmont, CA; and daughter, Laura Enloe Smallwood (Brad) of Wake Forest, NC; grandchildren: Elizabeth “Ellie”, Jordan, Jerrin and Ryan Smallwood and Nedjma Enloe; and a sister, Virginia Ann Lancaster. He is also survived by sister-in-law, Patricia Freeman (Chip Webster); brother-in-law, John Lee Freeman (Dolores); as well as many loving nieces and nephews.

A private graveside service, officiated by the Reverend Kevin Todd, was held for the family at St. Paul’s Community Cemetery in Edneyville, NC. Memorials may be made in William’s honor to St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 70, Edneyville, NC 29727.
