Virginia M. Vallar

October 2, 1929 - April 19, 2022

Virginia (Ginny) M. Vallar, 92, passed away on April 19, 2022, at Carolina Village in Hendersonville, NC.  Ginny was born in Flushing, NY, to the late Oswald and Lealyn Maurer.  She is also preceded in death by her husband James (Jim) Vallar, and her brother David Maurer.

Ginny attended Queens College earning a degree in Home Economics.  She worked at several NYC area hospitals as a dietician before marrying Jim Vallar in 1953.

Ginny and Jim made their family home in NY, and later lived in Georgia, Connecticut, and Pennsylvania.  During those years, Ginny was a homemaker and used her HomeEc background to sew professionally as well as for friends and family.  She was an expert pie maker, and brought much pleasure with her creative cooking skills. Before retiring, Ginny started a small business, “Special Care” which offered home companion/aide services in the north Philadelphia area.

They retired to Venice, Florida and spent summers in Alto, New Mexico.  They later moved to Hendersonville, NC, and finally settled in Carolina Village in 2010.  Their retirement years were filled with world travels to many exotic places including China, riverboat cruises in Europe, a ship excursion through the Panama Canal, and a safari in Tanzania.  At home, Ginny was involved in many activities at Carolina Village, including the Readers Club and treasured afternoons at the Dog Park.

Ginny was a member of Hendersonville Trinity Presbyterian Church and served as an elder.  Throughout the years, Ginny was been involved with church and community/volunteer service, including Habitat for Humanity, Hospice House of Venice-Florida, IAM Hendersonville sewing outfits for children, Hendersonville Little Theater designing costumes, and perhaps her most rewarding and final gift to others was visiting folks at Carolina Village’s Med & Care Centers along with her sweet dog Dolly.

Ginny had a real zest for life and was quick to flash her bright, cheery smile.  She loved flowers, uplifting music, dogs, chocolate, writing letters to beloved friends and family, planning social activities, puttering in the yard, and travelling.  Her upbringing during the depression taught her to be thrifty and to work with what you have.  She had a knack for sewing an outfit using scraps of fabric, or fixing a lovely meal from leftovers, or making a beautiful bouquet from weeds, twigs, and wildflowers.   She will be missed, but it is hoped that memories of her adventurous spirit will bring a happy smile to many.  If you see a wildflower blowing in the wind, please think of Ginny.

Ginny is survived by her daughter Barbara Russell (and David Walter) of Georgia; son Tom Vallar (and wife Becky) of New Hampshire; grandchildren Benjamin Russell, Daniel Vallar (and wife Kanako), Brittany Vallar; great-grandchildren Noah Vallar and Kai Vallar; very special niece Deb Maurer, and nephews Peter Maurer, and John Maurer.

The family wishes to extend their sincere gratitude to Ginny’s caregivers and staff at Carolina Village Care Center.  Their compassion and loving attention have been so appreciated.

If you wish to make a gift of remembrance in Ginny’s memory, please consider a donation to the Carolina Village Employee Appreciation Fund, at 600 Carolina Village Rd, Suite A, Hendersonville, NC  28792
