Valentine W. “Val” Murtha, 94, of Henderson County, NC died after an extended illness early Saturday morning, February 22, 2020 in Hendersonville, NC.
Mr. Murtha was born on Tuesday, August 4, 1925 in Los Angeles, California to the late Valentine W. and Catherine (Seibel) Murtha. On May 29, 1949 in Queens, New York, he married his beloved wife of 39 years, the former Dorothy M. Ackermann who died on February 20, 1989. On April 7, 1991 in Darien, Connecticut, he married his loving wife of 28 years, the former Patricia Hayes Madden who survives.
After graduating from high school and college, Mr. Murtha proudly served his country in the United states Air Corps and was honorably discharged in the autumn of 1945 and began a career with New York Telephone Company where he attained the position of Tax Examiner in the Legal Department. He was known for his compassionate dedication to his family and made many friends in New York, Vermont and North Carolina. He enjoyed classic cars, golf and woodworking. He was a faithful and devoted member of Grace Lutheran Church in Hendersonville, NC, where he served as an usher for many years. Members of the congregation remembered him as a friendly and dedicated usher who was known for always being meticulously dressed and greeting visitors and members with a warm smile.
In addition to his wife, Patricia, he leaves behind to cherish his memory his three children, Suzanne D. Dormsjo and her husband, Jan Sr. of Charlotte, NC, Jeffrey V. “Jeff” Murtha and his husband, Peter, Dr. Craig P. Murtha and his wife, Chris, all of Rock Hill, SC. Also surviving are four grandchildren, Jan E. Dormsjo, Kristin K. Politano, Justin V. Murtha and Jessica L. Van Dyck and two wonderful great-grandsons, Ben and Matthew.
A service to celebrate Mr. Murtha’s life will be eleven o’clock Saturday morning, February 29, 2020 at Grace Lutheran Church, 1245 6th. Avenue West, Hendersonville, NC with Reverend Greg Williams officiating.
Memorial contributions may be offered on behalf of Mr. Murtha to Grace Lutheran Church or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
Val led a life well-lived and will be forever missed by his loving and devoted family and many close and dear friends. MAY GOD GRANT HIM ETERNAL REST.
