Ruth Green Ballard

February 8, 1935 - May 8, 2022

Ruth Greene Ballard of Hendersonville died Sunday, May 8, 2022, at the Elizabeth House.

She received exceptional care from the staff at the Elizabeth House and their kindness to her
and her family will always be remembered.

Ruth was a lifelong resident of Henderson County and a graduate of the former Mills River High
School. She was also a graduate of the former Cecil’s Business College of Asheville. Ruth was
married for 51 years to the late Arthur Leroy Ballard and remained devoted to him until her
death. She worked at the Hendersonville City Water Department as a customer service supervisor
and retired after 31 years.

Ruth was the daughter of the late Illa V. Greene and Ovia Penland Greene of Mills River. She
was also preceded in death by seven siblings, Carl Greene, Anna Mae Bailey, Alma Greene,
Troy Greene, Phillip Greene, Mary Lee G. Keith, and Blanche “Bobbie” G. Bryson. She was also preceded in death by her son, John Lee Ballard of Montana.

Ruth was a kind and generous lady with a talent for cooking and making people feel welcome at
her kitchen table. Her true talent, however, was the way she was able to love people
unconditionally and always see the best in everyone. She was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother and her devotion to her family will be felt for generations.

She is survived by a sister, Hazel G. Shepherd of Hendersonville, and a son, James A. “Jim”
Ballard and a daughter, Tong Hui “Won” Ballard, both of Hendersonville. She is also survived by
her granddaughter, Alicia Ballard Westbrook, and her husband, Max Mays and as well as her
great-grandchildren Eli, Daniel, Luke Westbrook, and Rishi and Priya Mays.

A memorial service will be held at Shuler Funeral Home on Saturday, May 14 at 3:00 pm. In lieu
of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Elizabeth House Renovation
Campaign at 221 N. Main St. Hendersonville NC, 28792.
