Rene J. Hernandez

July 12, 1950 - January 28, 2022

On Friday, January 28, 2022, Rene J. Hernandez, beloved father, and friend, passed away at his residence in Hendersonville, North Carolina. He was 71.

Rene was a devoted father and grandfather. He spent 2018 and 2019 as a full-time grandfather. He treasured the time he spent with his granddaughter more than anything in the world.

A veteran of the United States Air Force, Rene served his country in the Vietnam War. He carried the scars from his time there, along with the effects of Agent Orange with him for the rest of his life. Rene spent his entire life working with his hands. He could fix almost anything, from computers to HVAC. He took special joy in making things, models, furniture, or anything that seemed like a challenge. He loved books and always had one in his hand. He taught his children from a young age that books were a gateway to distant worlds, and windows into the past.

Rene is survived by his children, Elliott Nathan Hernandez, and Aaron Rene Hernandez; his daughter-in-law, Owen; and his granddaughter, Thalia of Des Moines, Iowa.  Sister, Marlene V Saens of Ahwatukee, Arizona; brother, Paul Hernandez and wife Pamela Mabry of Netarts, Oregon; sisters, Ercie Mcleod of Irvine, California, Connie Hernandez Robbins and her husband John of San Jose, California and Jeannette Hernandez Garcia and her husband Michael of Orange, California.  He is also survived by his nieces, Lauren Ruth Hernandez and husband Jason Cosman, Taryn Rose Mcleod, Alexandra Hays Hernandez, Aundrea Michelle; and nephew, Cameron Robert Garcia.

A virtual memorial service will be held Saturday, February 5th, 2022, at 6:00 p.m. (eastern standard time). Please contact the family for more information.

In lieu of flowers, the family ask that you give in Rene’s memory to the California State Firefighters Association (, a cause Rene always supported during his life.
