Pastor Paul Brooks Chandler, Jr.

December 13, 1923 - August 19, 2020

Pastor Paul Brooks Chandler, Jr., affectionately known as “Preacher Paul,” went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Wednesday, August 19, 2020, at the age of 96. He was born in Greenville, SC on December 13, 1923, to Paul Brooks Chandler, Sr. and Margie Elizabeth Gregory Chandler.

Pastor Chandler preached his first sermon at the age of 17 to a group of young people at a youth rally in St. Petersburg, Florida. On his way to the church that night, he heard on the radio that the Japanese had bombed Pearl Harbor. The verses he preached to those young people were Romans 12:1-2: “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.” These became his life verses. He enlisted in the U.S. Army and served as a Staff Sergeant in Europe in WWII. After the War, he returned home and married Esther Lillian Allen Chandler on April 19, 1947. They had four daughters. He had a successful career in the pharmaceutical business, while also pastoring churches or serving as a pastoral supply at intervals, until he retired at the age of 55 from Ciba/Geigy (now Novartis). He then moved his family to Flat Rock, NC from Basking Ridge, NJ, because it was his desire to spend the rest of his days preaching the gospel of Christ. He pastored many churches in Western North Carolina, including Naples Baptist, Cedar Springs Baptist, Oak Forest Baptist, Dana Baptist, Refuge Baptist and Upward Baptist, preaching for over 75 years before his health failed him, and he had to step down from the pastorate. Even though he could no longer preach, he had the desire to do so until the day he died. After almost 52 years of marriage, his dear wife Esther passed away. In June of 2000, he married Betty King Edmonds and they were married for 18 years. Betty passed away in 2018. In addition to his two wives, he was preceded in death by his only sibling, Betty Jane Chandler Barr and by his precious daughter Susan Leigh Chandler.

Pastor Chandler is survived by 3 daughters, Pamela Chandler Evans (Mark) of Greenville, SC, Janice Chandler Worth (Stephen) of Blackpool, England, and Sharon Chandler Wilking (John) of Greenville, SC, two step-daughters Cheryl King (Steve) and Cathy Hill of Hendersonville, NC, and one step-son Bruce Keehner (Gloria) of Houston, Texas. He has ten grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, 2 step-grandchildren and one step-great-grandchild.

A funeral service will be held at 11am on Wednesday, August 26, 2020 at Dana Baptist Church with Pastor Mark Evans and Pastor Wilburn Lefler officiating. The family will receive friends from 10-11 am prior to the service. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

To God be the glory, great things He hath done!
