Melvin L. ìRoyî Collins, 82 of Horse Shoe passed away Saturday, December 24, 2011 at Wake Forest Baptist Hospital following a sudden illness. A native of Transylvania County he was a resident of Henderson County for most of his life. He was a son of the late Hank and Ella Goldsmith Collins and was also preceded in death by brothers Fred and Claude Collins and three sisters Evelyn Collins, Kathryn Stepp and Carolyn Bradley.
He served in Korea with the US Army 24th Division and retired from Cranston Print Works in 1987 after 33 years of service. A member of Antioch Baptist Church, he was an avid outdoorsman, loved hunting, fishing, and golf and was Papaw to everybody.
Surviving is his wife of 60 years Care Lean Collins; three sons Barry Collins and wife Liz of Pickens, SC, Glenn Collins and wife Janice of Flat Rock, and Jeff Collins and wife Terri of Clear Creek; two daughters Sherry Darlene Garren and husband Dennis of Etowah and Margie Duncan and husband Harold of Horse Shoe; two brothers Joe Collins and wife Jean and Wade Collins and wife Faye of Hendersonville; one sister Blanche Paris and husband Charles of Buford, GA; thirteen grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; a number of nieces and nephews; and best friend Jr. McDaniel.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00pm on Wednesday, at Antioch Baptist Church in Horse Shoe. Rev. Tommy Hart will officiate. Burial will follow in Oak Forest Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6pm until 8pm Tuesday at Shuler Funeral Home.
