Melvin Jay “Mel” Zwart, 89, of Lake Lure, NC passed away early Sunday afternoon, February 3, 2019 after a brief illness.
Mr. Zwart was born on Monday, March 25, 1929 in Chicago, IL to the late John and Pearl (Doezema) Zwart. On October 18, 1958 in Holland, MI he married his wife of 60 years, the former Corry Bloemendal. Mr. Zwart proudly served his country in the 245th Tank Battalion in the United States Army during the Korean War and was the recipient of the Bronze Star. After being discharged from the Army he worked for International Harvester as a manager in their transportation division, retiring after 44 years of service. He was also a faithful member of his church, Pinecrest Presbyterian Church in Hendersonville, NC.
He leaves behind to cherish his memory his loving wife, Corry Zwart of Lake Lure; two sons, John Zwart and his wife Margie of Frisco, TX and Mark Zwart and his wife Christie of Batavia, IL; grandchildren, Mariah, Jordan, Laura and Jack. Also surviving is a sister, Lane DeVries of Portage, IN. In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by his sister, Fran Terpstra.
Funeral services will be 11 o’clock Thursday morning, February 7, 2019 at Pinecrest Presbyterian Church, 1790 Greenville Hwy, Hendersonville, NC 28792 with Pastor Rhett Carson officiating. Burial with Military Honors will follow in the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery in Black Mountain, NC.
Memorial contributions may be offered on behalf of Mr. Zwart to Pinecrest Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 3421, Flat Rock, NC 28731.
Mel will be deeply missed by his loving and devoted family and many dear friends.
