Mary Rosalie Martella

March 12, 1938 - July 12, 2020

Mary “Rosalie” Burns Martella, 82, of Hendersonville, NC passed away Sunday, July 12, 2020.  She died peacefully at home with Frank, her husband of 54 years holding her hand.

She was born in Sibley, Iowa to the late Donald and Theressa Tossini Burns.  Rosalie was always interested in education and was a prolific reader of everything from history, political science, to murder mysteries and fiction.  She graduated with a B.A. degree from Briar Cliff College, Sioux City, Iowa and began teaching in Omaha, Nebraska; she then moved to Seville, Spain where she taught dependents of military personnel. It is also where she met and married her husband and they started their family. The family moved to the U.K. where they lived for many years, before Rosalie and Frank relocated to North Carolina.

Rosalie is survived by her daughters Melanie Martella, of Hendersonville and Heidi Martella Doswell of Milton Keynes, England. Rosalie has two grandsons: Bradley and Louie Doswell.

She is also survived by two sisters, Margaret Burns of Norco, CA. and Donna Burns Kirsch of Holts Summit, MO.  She has one nephew Alex Kirsch.

Rosalie attended the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Hendersonville, NC.  She was also an active and delightful participant of the Second Tuesday Book Bugs Book Club (as well as the Old Originals for alumni of the book club) and taught water aerobics for her fellow Mermaids.

There will be no services at this time.

Arrangements are in the care of Shuler Funeral Home of Hendersonville, NC. 828-693-5220.
