Mary Dufner, 81, of Hendersonville passed away on Thursday, January 16, 2020 at the Elizabeth House. She was born on June 29,1938 in St Paul, MN to Eleanor and Henry Wilhelm. Mary was the oldest of five children, with Hank Wilhelm, Jr., of New Hope, Mn surviving her. She was preceded by siblings, John Wilhelm, Patrick Wilhelm and Scherry Schroeder.
After graduating from Our Lady of Peace High School in 1956, she met and married Charles J Dufner after he arrived home from his service in the 82nd Airborne. They settled in St Louis Park, MN where they raised their four children, Charlene, Christopher, Randall and Charles Jr. During that time, she worked as a nurses aid, teacher aid and a secretary.
Mary also enjoyed their four grandchildren, Christopher, Cheri, Veronica and Kevin; and her great grandchildren, Liara and Farrah.
In 1975, they moved to Big Birch Lake MN for a few years, where she worked in a Youth Correctional Institution for juveniles. This was one of her most fulfilling jobs as she worked with young people to help them change the course of their lives.
In 1977, she moved to Satellite Beach, FL, with her husband and two youngest children, where Mary worked as assistant secretary for the Brevard County School Superintendent until her and Charlie were offered a position as resident managers on Sanibel Island. Mary remained there as head secretary for 20 years, until their retirement in June of 2000.
She eventually moved to Hendersonville, NC, with her husband, to join their children. Mary soon got involved in her Parish ICM and Open Arms Pregnancy Center. She was very devoted to her faith and passionate about the Pro-Life Movement. Mary was also involved and a grateful member of Alcoholics Anonymous for over 40 years and credits this program for saving her life.
Memorial and celebration of Mary’s life will be held this Saturday for family and close friends this Saturday January 25th between 1 to 4 pm Location: 221 Daniel Drive in Laurel Park at Gary and Charlene Olsen’s home.Funeral Service will be held on February 28,2020 at Precious Blood Catholic Church in Owensboro KY.
