Major Max Neil Sipe

Major Max Neil Sipe, 85, of Hendersonville, passed away on Friday, December 18, 2020 at his residence.  He was born August 1, 1935 in Clover, South Carolina to Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Sipe.  The oldest of five children, he had three sisters and one brother.  One sister, Betty Whitesides, preceded him in death, in addition to their parents.  He graduated from Clover High School in 1954.  Max was born again in 1954 and was sanctified later that year.  He was a member of The First United Methodist Church of Clover.  Max received his calling to become a Minister in the Salvation Army.  Max met the Salvation Army through his Uncle and Aunts, Majors Arthur and Madeline Kinlaw and Majors John and Genelle Sipe.  He was invited to live with the Kinlaws in New Bern, NC where he became a Senior Soldier of The Salvation Army.  Max entered the College for Officer Training from New Bern, NC.  After his graduation from the Salvation Army College, he was Ordained a Salvation Army Officer and was appointed to serve in Florence, Alabama.

Max became engaged to Lt. Dorothy Powell and they were united in Marriage in 1959.  Max and Dorothy were appointed to serve in Decatur, Alabama.  Their children, Michelle and Marsha, were born in Bessemer, Alabama.

The Sipes continued their Ministry together with appointments in Mobile, Prichard, Bessemer, Anniston, Huntsville, and Decatur, Alabama; Monroe, Louisiana; Jackson, Mississippi; Durham, High Point, Mount Airy, Waynesville, North Carolina; and Conway, South Carolina.  Max had a deep love for winning all people and hearts to Christ.

Max was appointed to the Brengle Memorial Institute to learn more about the Doctrine of Holiness.  Throughout the many years of serving in the Salvation Army, Max was active in the Lions Club, Kiwanis Club, Rotary, Ministerial Associations, Junior Chamber of Commerce, Prison Ministry, the United Way, and many other community programs.

Max and Dorothy retired in Hendersonville with a total of 82 years of service.  Max then  served as the Thrift Store Coordinator for five years and as the community relations spokesperson for the Salvation Army in Transylvania county for eight years.  Max became the Corps Sergeant Major of the Hendersonville Corps and was also active in other ministries of the Corps. The Brevard Rotary Club gave Max an Honorary Membership and the Service Above Self Award.  During his active years he received the honor of Citizen of the Year in Bessemer, Alabama.

Max Sipe is survived by his wife, Dorothy; his two daughters, Michelle White (Tim) and Marsha Mooney (Dennis); grandchildren, Courtney Fonseca (Glenn) and Colin Mooney; two great-grandchildren; brother, Daniel Sipe; and sisters, Darnelle Sweatt and Madge Biggers (Manning).

A Funeral Service will be held at the Salvation Army in Hendersonville on Monday, December 21, 2020 at 2pm, with a visitation the hour prior.  Interment will follow the service at Shepherd Memorial Park.
