Julia Edith Rosien Shirley, 68, of Mills River passed away on Wednesday, May 26, 2021 at the Elizabeth House following a courageous 16-year battle with cancer. A native of New Jersey, she had resided in Henderson County for the past 18 years. Julia was a daughter of the late Charles and Edith Rosien. She was also preceded in death by her brothers, Charles and Tommy Rosien and brother-in-law, Jimmy Murray.
Julia was employed as an instructor with the Motorcycle Safety Foundation for over 20 years, prior to her retirement. She was an active member of Mills River Presbyterian Church, where she volunteered on many committees. Julia loved baking, gardening, and spending time at the beach. She was a great bowler and competed on multiple leagues until Covid shut those down. Julia loved her family dearly, especially her grandchildren, whom she was always quick to defend.
She is survived by her loving husband of 42 years, Gene; daughters, Rebecca Barnard (Lee) and Elizabeth Lindsey (Drew); son, AJ Hashtani; stepson, Brett Shirley; grandchildren, Dakota Malone, Courtney Barnard, Spencer Barnard, Jacob Solchenberger and Charleigh Lindsey; sisters, Janet Marcone (Vinnie) and Karen Murray; brother, Johnny Rosien (Patricia); her beloved Dachshunds, Maggie, Millie and Morder, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
A memorial service will be held at 2pm on Sunday, May 30, 2021 at Mills River Presbyterian Church with Pastor Merri Alexander, and Pastor Randall Boggs officiating. The family will receive friends following the service.
