Joseph Philip Freitus, Jr. 86, of Henderson County, NC and formerly of Williamsburg, VA died after a brief illness early Thursday morning, December 12, 2019 at his home with his family near his side.
On Thursday, March 30, 1933 in West Groton, MA he was born to the late Joseph Philip and Anita (Bertozzi) Freitus, Sr. On January 10, 1954 in West Groton, MA he married his loving wife of 65 years, the former Anne Elizabeth Hosking who survives. He proudly served his country in the United States Navy during the Korean War and was member of Underwater Demolitions Teams before being honorably discharged in September 1955. After the war he earned two masters degrees from the University of Seattle Washington and Fitchburg State University with degrees in Plant Physiology and Education. He authored 22 books in military history, historical fiction, personal historical stories and edible wild food cookbooks. He was a faithful and devoted member of the Catholic Church. But he will be most remembered as a loving husband, father and grandfather and great-grandfather.
In additional to his wife, he leaves behind to cherish his memory his 3 children, Lizabeth A. Rapoza and her husband, David of Townsend, MA, James P. Freitus and his wife, Pamela of Denton, TX and Christopher J. Freitus and his wife, Venus of Hendersonville, NC. Also surviving are 4 grandchildren, Hali Schneiter and her husband, Corey, Kyle Freitus, Tenli Weber and her husband, Nick and Sean Freitus; 4 great-grandchildren, Carter, Boston, Perri and Lilah. In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by his brother, Philip Freitus.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated two o’clock Tuesday afternoon, December 17, 2019 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 208 7th. Avenue, West, Hendersonville, NC 28791, with Father Christian Cook as celebrant.
Memorial contributions may be offered on behalf of Mr. Freitus to Four Seasons Hospice, 571 South Allen Road, Flat Rock, NC 28731.
The family wishes to thank all the caregivers and especially the Angels of Hospice for the love and compassion to Mr. Freitus.
Joe will be forever missed by his loving and devoted family and many dear friends. May God grant him eternal peace.
