On 18 March 2018, Joanna “Jenny” Bemis was taken home to the lord. She was a resident in Carolina Village in Hendersonville, North Carolina, and was born in Indianapolis, Indiana. Jenny graduated from Butler University with honors in English and Spanish, along with memberships in Kappa Kappa Gamma, Scarlet Quill, Spanish Club, YWCA, Panhellenic Council as well as many other clubs. She married her college sweetheart, Thomas Bemis, and they shared 68 wonderful years together. Jenny taught school in Lee Center, Grand Detour, and Dixon Illinois for 30 years before retiring. Jenny and Tom moved to the Hendersonville – Flat Rock area in 1989 and enjoyed 29 years there. While in the area, they thoroughly enjoyed their mountain home at the end of Pheasant Run and all the people along the way. Jenny loved playing bridge, golf, dancing and exercise. Tom and Jenny were members of the First UMC of Hendersonville and were active many years with the North Carolina P.E.O Sisterhood. Jenny was a special lady to all, a favorite teacher to many, and very loved by her family.
Jenny is survived by her husband Thomas Bemis III, of Hendersonville, NC; sons, Thomas M. Bemis of Arlington, MA, and Tim and Betty Bemis of Indianapolis, IN; grandchildren, Sara Bemis, Alex and Emily Voermann, Benjamin Bemis of Indianapolis, IN.
A graveside service will be held at 2pm on Sunday, March 25 at Washington Park Cemetery in Indianapolis, Indiana. A memorial service will be held at 9:30am on Saturday, April 14th in The Village Hall of Carolina Village in Hendersonville, NC.
