He was born March 22, 1943 in Marion, North Carolina, and was a son of the late Allen and Nina Sexton Mathis. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Jesse Allen Mathis. After graduating from Marion High School, he married Barbara Hollifield and they moved to Newport News, Virginia where both daughters, Tiffany and Tamara were born. He worked for Newport News Shipbuilding, and later for Oldsmobile and Ford dealerships in the parts departments. In 1966 the family moved to Matthews, North Carolina where he continued his career at Ford. He later became a claims adjuster for Allstate Insurance Company. The family moved to Hendersonville, NC in 1971.

Jerry relocated to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina in 1984. While living in Myrtle Beach, he married Rose Ann Maxwell Edney and they were married 37 wonderful years. Jerry loved Myrtle Beach, the shoreline, and hunting for sharks teeth. His neighborhood offered many hours of fun antics and libations, where he was often referred to as “The Mayor of Highland”.

After retirement, Jerry was a member of the Allstate Disaster Relief Team. He assisted numerous families across the country helping to put their lives back together after devastating hurricanes, tornadoes, floods and other natural disasters.

He is survived by his wife, Rose Ann Maxwell Edney Mathis; his daughters, Tiffany and husband Jim Marshall, Tamara and husband Jeff Miller; all of Hendersonville, NC; two grandsons, Beck Miller of Charlotte, NC and Hank Marshall and wife Hannah of Asheville, NC; one granddaughter, Wesleigh Marshall of Hendersonville, NC (all of whom lovingly called him “DOUBLE”); sister, Diane Henline Davis; several nieces and a nephew; his step children, Kim and husband Keith Heery, Chris and wife Christina Edney; step-grandsons, Sawyer Heery and Maxwell Edney; step-granddaughter, Taylor Heery and husband Kyle Griffith; step great-grandchildren, Hiram and Margeaux Rose Griffith all of Hendersonville, NC.

To know Jerry was to know his intense love for his family, friends, pets, and cars. His favorites being a 1955 Ford Thunderbird that he lovingly restored; his basset hounds, Zoro and Rufus; special friends, Ray Cheek and the late Rick Wentzky; his beloved wife, Rose Ann and his daughters, Tiffany and Tamara. He was funny, quick to laugh, and engaging to all he met. His warm nature, bright smile, and charitable spirit will be missed.
