Gifts & Memorial Donations

Jerrold Arthur Horton, 64, of Candler passed away on Tuesday, February 21, 2017 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Asheville after a long illness.

Jerrold was the son of the late Jack McClinton Horton and Marian Haynes Horton. Jerry, as he was known in his younger years, is survived by his brother, Jack Nicholas Horton of Atlanta, GA and by his two sisters, Anice Ward and her husband Michael, of Woodstock, GA and Patrice German and her husband, Gary, of Flat Rock; nieces, Emily Ward of New Haven, CT and Kristin Gable of Charlotte; and his nephew, Greg German of Raleigh.

Jerrold worked as a sous chef in different restaurants over the years and liked to say he acquired his love of cooking from his mother and brother. He was especially proud of his chili recipe and the variety of sauces he created. He was a nature lover and avid reader, especially enjoying science fiction and anything Tolkien. He always had a growing project going on: tomatoes, gourds or houseplants. Jerrold loved living in the countryside and spending time on the Blue Ridge Parkway.

A simple graveside service will be held at 2 pm Saturday at Ashelawn Gardens of Memory, 901 Aiken Rd., Asheville, NC 28804. All are welcome to attend.

Memorial contributions may be made to The Nature Conservancy, 545 Merrimon Ave, Asheville, NC 28804 or to the NC Arboretum, 100 Frederick Law Olmsted Way, Asheville, NC 28806.

I remember Jerry form working with him . I was always amazed of his knowledge and ability to give me an answer to any off the wall questions I would ask him . He would even find books that helped me understand a certain subject I would ask about . Thanks for taking the time to answer any question I asked and educating this thick sculled hillbilly . Rest in peace Jerry . Amazing man !
