Jean Kathryn Sunderland Murphy passed away in her sleep in the early hours of 13th August 2021. Born to Clyde Mills Sunderland and Janet Baird Morris Sunderland, she was delivered by Dr. Lauretta Kress on 8th October 1926 at Washington Sanitarium, Takoma Park, Maryland.
She was a 1944 graduate of Takoma Academy and wed Harvey Wright Murphy of Wilson, North Carolina on 27th April 1947. Jean went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts in Music Performance (organ) from Atlantic Christian College (Barton College, Wilson, North Carolina) in 1963.
Jean’s passion and life’s work was in music education and performance, especially for her church, playing organ, piano, directing children’s vocal choirs, directing English handbell choirs, and private piano lessons.
She was preceded in death by her husband Harvey, and sister, Phyllis Sunderland Show.
Jean is survived by her three children (Joan, Blair, Lynn); four grandchildren (Jyll, Madison, Dane, Lynn); and three great grandchildren (Philip, Jean, William).
Plans for a service to celebrate her life are incomplete.
