James Edward ìJimî Baine, beloved husband, father, brother, grandfather, and friend entered into eternal rest with his Heavenly Father, as a result of an accidental death in Fair Play, SC on Monday, May 17, 2010.

He was a native of Cherokee County, NC, son of the late Bertha Deaver and Jeter Pritchard Baine. He retired in 1993 as Superintendent of North Carolina Department of Corrections Henderson County Unit after 35 years of dedicated service. He was instrumental in constructing the first Inmate Chapel in North Carolina, which laid the foundation for future correctional center chapels throughout the state. He was a strong supporter of the Yoke Fellow and Blue Ridge Prison Ministries. He was a US Army Veteran, member of Kedron Masonic Lodge, Past Commander of Hubert M. Smith American Legion, a great fisherman, avid democrat and was of the Baptist faith. He loved his family and friends dearly and cherished his time with them. Jim never met a stranger and was always there to help his fellow man. Since his retirement he spent many pleasurable days on the lake with his family and friends. He liked nothing more than to sit in his rocking chair on the porch, watching the sunset and sharing his fishing tales and other stories.

He is survived by his wife of 31 years Charlena Frady Baine; daughter Taletha Diane Capps and her husband Charles William Capps, Jr.; granddaughter Jamie Elizabeth Lenz and grandson Jordan Edward Lenz, all of Warner Robins, Georgia; a sister Betty Kilpatrick and her husband Gary of Murphy, NC; a brother Paul M. Baine and his wife Sarah of Sharon, SC; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his devoted sister Lois Ianella and brothers Harding and Earl.

He also leaves behind his faithful lake canine companions ìBelleî and ìPup-Pupî, who remained with him on the shore until the very end when emergency help arrived.

    Larry E. Harris says:
Sometimes an obituary can not capture the scale and depth of a personís life. This is the case with Jim Baine who was such a positive influence on so many people Ö on both sides of the law. Jim was a compassionate man who was scrupulously fair to all his wards and professionally competent in his official duties.. He always exercised common sense and decency in his job Ö and maintained a wonderful good humor in a difficult profession. Over thirty years on, I still tell the classic ìCapín Jimî story of an escapee search, when I was a young law enforcement officer, when Capín Jim counseled me that he had ìwalked more miles backwardsî than I had ìwalked forwardsîÖ you have to think about thatÖ and envision prison work partiesÖ. He knew his job thoroughly. In this case we went directly to where Jim knew the escapee would be found and Jim ìcapturedí him like a dad would pick up a teenager who was late coming homeÖ no guns or drama. Jim Baine was a genuine, unique and honest man who was a tremendous asset and credit to the public safety of the citizens of North Carolina.
