Iris Chamblin Whittington

August 4, 1932 - December 12, 2021


Iris Chamblin Whittington, age 89, of Laurel Park, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 12, 2021, at Four Seasons Elizabeth House in Flat Rock, North Carolina. Iris grew up in Jacksonville, Florida and was the oldest of 7 children.  Her parents were John Anderson Chamblin and Erma Jean Terry Chamblin.


She graduated from Robert E. Lee High School in Jacksonville.  She also received a diploma from the Clara Barton Vocational High School in Baltimore, Maryland where she attended business courses providing training in shorthand, typing, and bookkeeping.  Iris utilized her education and training to achieve a successful career as an administrative assistant.  She retired from CTI Molecular Imaging (Knoxville, Tennessee) in 2004 after 10 years of service.  She received the Outstanding Contributor Recognition Award for 4 of those years.


Iris married Hugh Delma Moxley (deceased) in 1950 and had one son born January 30, 1953, Lewis Glenn Moxley (deceased May 4, 2007). In 1979, Iris found love again and married Richard Stade Whittington.  They had a marriage filled with travel, great food, and lots of laughs.  They resided in beautiful Friendsville, Tennessee with an amazing view of the Tennessee River.  Iris cared for her husband during his cancer diagnosis and was with him when he passed away on July 10, 2008.


Iris began a new chapter of her life after the death of her husband and moved to the Hendersonville area where she found new friendships, enjoyed great weather and a beautiful setting in the North Carolina mountains.  She was passionate about cultivating her spirituality and was an avid reader of a multitude of books to expand her knowledge and understanding of the various perspectives regarding spirituality. Iris was an immensely generous and kind person.  She touched the lives of all that knew her and will be greatly missed.


Preceding her in death are Richard S. Whittington (husband), Lewis Glenn Moxley (son), Pamela Whittington Rosenberger (stepdaughter), Glen Whittington (stepson), John Chamblin (brother), Carl Chamblin (brother) and her parents, John and Erma Chamblin.


Iris is survived by her three grandsons, Anthony Moxley (Carla), Daniel Moxley and Matthew Moxley (Desiree); and her five great-grandchildren, Evie and Evan (Anthony), Emily and Layla (Daniel) and Johnny (Matthew). She is also survived by Kay Chamblin Knight (sister), Sue Chamblin Frederick (sister), Ronnie Chamblin (brother), and Beth Chamblin Lindquist (sister).


A celebration of Mrs. Whittington’s life will be held on Monday, January 10, 2022, at 2:00 p.m. in the Kirby Memorial Chapel of Shuler Funeral Home in Hendersonville, North Carolina.


Iris will be laid to rest next to her late husband Richard Whittington at Oaklawn Cemetery in Jacksonville, Florida, with a graveside service on Monday, January 17, 2022, at 2:00 p.m.
