Hershel Sheldon Elam, 86, of Mills River, NC, died Thursday, August 21, 2008 at his home.
Born in Haysi, VA, he was the son of the late Charles Benton Elam and Winnie Elizabeth Puckett Elam. He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Cyril Fayne Elam and Charles Benton Elam, Jr., and his sister, Ula Rae Elam.
He was a veteran of both World War II and the Korean Conflict, serving in the US Air Force as Crew Chief while stationed at Fort Fisher. He was a member of the Bovingdon Bunch, a group of World War II pilots. After he retired from the Air Force in 1967, he worked at the NASA Tracking Station in Balsam Grove, NC.
He is survived by his wife, Juanita Elam of Mills River; five daughters, Shirley Jean Patton of Memphis, TN; Elizabeth Ann Berchtold of Spartanburg, SC; Barbara Elam Owen and husband, Mike, of Brevard; Martha Elam Galloway and husband, Rex, of Rosman; and Marilyn Elam McWhorter and husband, Rick, of Hendersonville; grandchildren, Amanda Lowallen and husband, Alexis; Charmeri Elam, Bianca Berchtold; Michelle Franks and husband, Richard; Michael Owen and wife, Vicki; Marcey McCall and husband, Caleb; Amanda Galloway and husband Eli; Matthew Sheldon Owen; Ginger Lance and husband, Ricky; Cryshtal Avera and husband, Randy; and Ashley Sprouse and husband, Casey; great-grandchildren, Gideon, Christopher, Penny, Marissa, Chloe, Neela, Evan, Preston, Aiden, Eden, Maddy, Clayten, and Candace; and a special niece, Landra Watson.
A memorial service will be held at 5 PM Saturday, August 23, 2008, in the Kirby Memorial Chapel of Shuler Funeral Home. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. A committal service will be at 2 PM Sunday, August 24, 2008 at Elam Puckett Cemetery in Haysi, VA.
