Helen Marie Johnson

July 8, 1925 - March 22, 2021

Helen Marie Johnson, 95, of Hendersonville, North Carolina, left this earth and went to be with the Lord on Monday, March 22, 2021.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lyle T. Johnson, her younger daughter, Bonnie Musselwhite, and four older siblings, Torris Alstead Geraldson, Lillian G. Waid, Stanley Geraldson, and Mildred G. Ashley.

She is survived by her daughter, Barbara Perry (Andrew); son-in-law Mitchell Musselwhite; grandchildren, Laura M. Rice (Kyle), Rebekah Musselwhite, David Musselwhite, and Sarah Musselwhite; and several nieces and nephews.

Born July 8, 1925, to Torris Arnt Geraldson and Gunda Louise Olson Sonnevik Geraldson in Waukesha, Wisconsin, she spent some of her growing-up years in South Dakota and Montana.  After two years of Bible School, she spent six years selling children’s books and other items door to door for that group, first in Milwaukee and then New York City, before going to Bob Jones University in Greenville, SC.  After graduation, she taught shorthand and typing there for several years.  She then moved to Buffalo, NY where she taught two years in public elementary schools before marrying and moving to Port Tobacco, Maryland.

In 1974, she and Lyle and their two daughters moved to Hendersonville, NC. They later lived 12 years in Brevard before returning to Hendersonville.

Helen’s first love, since age 18, was her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.  She loved to share the good news of salvation.  Over the years, she taught the Bible to numerous groups, mostly women or children, both in church and in her own home.   As her mother before her, she valued memorizing Scripture and hymns and encouraged her family and others to do the same.  Many of these were still with her late in life even as she forgot so much else.

She was a content homemaker with a kind heart and welcoming smile.

Interests included reading, nutrition, current affairs, taking walks and living simply.  In later years she lost much of her vision and hearing, and later, memory and mobility, but she never lost her love for God and people, or her sense of humor.  She was still an encourager and a delight to be around.

She was a member of Bethany Bible Church, though she had been homebound for some years.

A graveside service will be held at 11:00am  Saturday, March 27, 2021 at Blue Ridge Gardens of Memory.

Memorials may be made to New York Gospel Ministries, Inc.  350 W. 26th St., New York, NY 10001 or Four Seasons Hospice Compassion for Life, 571 S. Allen Rd., Flat Rock, NC 28731.
