Guy L. Wellman

Guy L. Wellman, 99, of Flat Rock, NC, passed away on Monday, January 11, 2021, at his home. He was born in LaPorte, Indiana, and was a son to the late Guy Lionel Wellman Sr. and Leona Schultz Wellman. He was also preceded in death by his first wife of 57 years, Frances Renfro Wellman.

Before settling in Flat Rock, NC he resided in Valparaiso, IN, and Downers Grove, IL. Guy graduated from Indiana University in 1943 and went on to serve in the U.S. Army from 1943 – 1946 as an officer in the 99th Infantry Division during World War II. He was awarded the Bronze Star during Ruhr Pocket.

Following the war, he signed his first professional baseball contract in 1946 with the Cincinnati Reds. In 1948 he was traded to the Brooklyn Dodgers as a minor league catcher. He played baseball and coached in the off-season until 1950 when he was recalled to serve during the Korean War. Following his discharge, he became a football coach at Valparaiso University and subsequently took a position as basketball and baseball coach at Downers Grove High School in Downers Grove, Illinois. During the summers he scouted for the Dodgers and served as player/manager in the Basin League. In 1962 he returned to baseball full time in a scouting position. During his 29-year tenure, he received five coveted World Series rings.

Guy was an avid golfer, fisherman, and reader. He attended Saluda Methodist Church.

He will be missed by many including his wife of 19 years, Judi Wellman; daughter Connie (Gene) Bouwman of Denver, CO, stepdaughter Dawn Winter of Flat Rock, NC, stepson David (Allison) Brumbaugh of Indianapolis, IN; brother Bill (Roberta Norwich) Wellman of Valparaiso, IN; grandchildren, Katherine Yturri and Joanna (Gino) Maurelli; step-grandchildren Michael (Sally) Bouwman, Michelle (Kris) Trahnstrom, Kinsey Winter, Alex Winter, and Sam Brumbaugh and four great-grandchildren, Franny and Gabby Yturri and Mitera and Guy Maurelli, all of Colorado.
