George F. Schirick, 88 of East Flat Rock, NC, formerly of Liberty, NY and Kingston, NY passed away at Pardee Memorial Hospital, Hendersonville, NC, on Tuesday, March 31, 2009.
George was born in Kingston, NY, the son of the late Edward Arthur and M. Kathryn Schirick. He graduated from Kingston High School and Albany Business College.
He enlisted in the U. S. Army at the beginning of World War II, serving in the Quartermaster Corps in the Aleutian Islands and Pacific. He attained the rank of Master Sergeant and was honorably discharged at the end of the war.
Before moving to Henderson County, North Carolina in 1992, he worked for several insurance companies and insurance brokers between 1947 and 1991. He retired from Markel Rhulen Underwriters and Brokers, Monticello, NY in 1991 as an Associate Vice President. A lifelong student and avid reader he was designated a Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) in 1960. He also worked as the Starter and Ranger at Cummings Cove Golf Course for several years after relocating from New York. He loved the game of golf.
He is survived by his loving wife of almost 62 years, Mary Fallon Schirick; his son, Edward A. Schirick and his wife, Cathleen M. Schirick, of Rock Hill, NY; two grandsons, E. Scott Schirick, and his wife, Elizabeth A. Schirick, and Michael C. Schirick, all of Hoboken, NJ; one granddaughter, Elizabeth M. Schirick of Brookline, MA; and one great-grandson, Henry Brewster Schirick of Hoboken, NJ.
The family will receive friends and neighbors to celebrate Georgeís life on Sunday, April 5, 2009 at the Shuler Funeral Home from 2:00 to 4:00pm. Military Honors will be conducted by Hubert M. Smith American Legion Post 77, Hedrick-Rhodes Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5206 and Disabled Veterans Chapter 14. A private memorial service for the family will follow in the Kirby Memorial Chapel at the Funeral Home.
