Gayle S. Simmons

February 12, 1940 - August 3, 2019

Gayle S. Simmons, 79, of Hendersonville, got her angel wings suddenly on Saturday, August 3, 2019 at her residence. She was born an only child to the late Mary Lois and Harvey Swinson in Charlotte, NC, and is also preceded in death by her husband, Thomas L. Simmons in 2016.

Gayle was a huge sports fan.  She loved her ECU Pirates, the Panthers and Jeff Gordon.  She also enjoyed watching college sports— especially Tarheel basketball, as well as golf and tennis. Gayle was an avid bowler and loved to fish. She was a member of the Methodist Church her entire life.

Left to cherish her memory are her children, Thomas “Lee” Simmons, Jr. (Gerry) of Charlotte, NC, and Sharon Matthews (Steve) of Florida; grandchildren, Ryan and Chase Matthews; sisters-in-law, Ellen Bielan (Bob) and Alice Simmons; and several nieces. She is predeceased by dog Smokey and survived by dog Skippy.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Thursday, August 8, 2019 at 12pm at the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery in Black Mountain. Interment will follow the service, which will be officiated by Pastor Brent Thomas.

Gayle will be remembered for her kind and generous spirit. She was loved by all who knew her and will be forever missed.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Gayle’s honor to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital or the Henderson County Sherriff’s Department.
