Donald James Nolan

October 27, 1941 - December 5, 2020

Donald James Nolan, 79, died peacefully on Saturday, December 5th, 2020 after a long battle with Alzheimer’s Disease.  Don was preceded in death by his father Kenneth, mother Marian, and sister Helen Marie.  Don is survived by Ann, his loving wife of 45 years; sons David, Ken and Matt; stepsons John and Matt Bailey; cousin Beverly Stenberg and ten grandchildren.

A native of Binghamton, NY, Don graduated from Syracuse University in 1963 and began a long and successful career with the Aetna Insurance Company.  After retiring in 1997, Don and his wife Ann settled in Flat Rock, NC where he was an active member of the community.  Don’s lifelong love of music inspired him to join the Hendersonville Community Band where he played the trumpet and served as Business Manager.  He positively impacted many lives through his involvement with the Big Brothers Organization, SCORE, Kiwanis Club, Children & Family Resource Center Board of Directors and the Parish Council at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church.  Don was especially committed to supporting the mission of the St. Gerard House of Hendersonville, serving as a longtime member of the Board of Directors.

Don will be remembered for his quick, witty sense of humor that left a lasting impression on all who knew him.  He loved playing golf and travel, particularly trips to visit his sons and grandchildren. An avid football fan, Don attended all four Super Bowls that his beloved Buffalo Bills played in and supported the Syracuse Orangeman.

A limited capacity memorial mass, due to current gathering restrictions, will be held at 2pm on Tuesday, December 15, 2020 at Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church with Father Torres officiating.

The family is grateful for the compassionate care that Don received at the Carolina Reserve of Hendersonville, and also for the care given by Four Seasons Compassion for Life.  In lieu of flowers, the family would be grateful if Don’s life were remembered through a donation in his name to: St. Gerard House 620 Oakland Street Hendersonville, NC 28791.
