David Michael Henderson

January 13, 1943 - January 22, 2020

David M. Henderson of Hendersonville, NC, died at Mission Hospital after an accidental fall on January 22, 2020.  He was born on January 13, 1943 to the late Mack V. Henderson and Louise Stepp Henderson.  He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Olivia Rogers Henderson; a brother, Charles Richard Henderson; two sisters, Phyllis Elaine Cone and Carol Ann Walters; two nieces, Kerry Spachman and Debra Henderson; one nephew, Ross Henderson, and a great niece, Jordan Heath.

David was a graduate of Hendersonville High School, class of 1961, and Asheville-Buncombe Technical College with a degree in Electronical Engineering and Technology.  He was employed with AT&T in the Marketing Department as a Communications Consultant.  After the AT&T office closed, he was employed with Asheville Industries as a subsidiary of Tenneco of Newport News, Virginia.  Upon the closing of Asheville Industries, he started his own business as a consultant, selling and installing telephone systems.  He was self-employed for 22 years, hanging-up his tool belt in 2014.  That’s 50 years of telephone work.  He was well respected for his knowledge and quality of work.

David was a veteran of the U.S. Army.  He was assigned to the STRATCOM Unit, which is a world-wide communications group.  He took his job seriously and served our country well by keeping the communications line working from Vietnam to the Philippines, Fort Monmouth, NJ, and other places around the world.  He returned from Vietnam to the STRATCOM Headquarters in Fort Huachuca, Arizona.  He was honorably discharged with several medals of commendation in October 1967.

David and his wife, Olivia, shared many interests together including numerous trips across our nation and Canada, photography, Amateur Radio Operators, catching rides on narrow-gauge steam engine trains, and dancing, especially the Texas Two-Step and Country Waltz.  David loved reading non-fiction and studying maps in his atlases.  He seldom needed a map and never used a GPS to find his way around the country.  His map to Heaven was his belief in our Lord Jesus Christ.  He was saved and baptized as a young lad and most recently attended East Flat Rock First Baptist Church.  He had faith, hope and love, but the greatest of these is love.
