David Cooper Nabers, aged 70, of Flat Rock passed away in the Elizabeth House early Sunday morning, June 2, 2019 after a brief battle with brain cancer. David was the consummate family man, leaving a legacy of unconditional love, support, and goodness in regards to his family, church, and community.
A native of the area, he was a true mountain man; born and raised in Saluda, he loved being at one with nature, especially at his cabin in Saluda, lovingly referred to as Camp David. He was an appreciator of the arts, a talented wood-carver and artist. Many of his most treasured memories were shrimping and fishing on the waters of Murrell’s Inlet and boating on Lake Hartwell with his brothers and family. He was his grandchildren’s greatest spectator and biggest fan, always attending and sometimes coaching every sporting event, theatre performance, and other important moments in their lives, big and small. He was a tremendous father figure and strong role model for all he came in contact with, but especially his children and grandchildren. He owned and ran McCall Sheet Metal and Roofing for over 30 years and was an active member of Bethel Wesleyan Church where he served on the board and as a trustee. He was a graduate of East Henderson High School, Class of 1968, where he met Becky, the love of his life and best friend. He never met a stranger and was always willing and dedicated to helping others. David was a kind and steadfast patriarch, always cracking jokes and offering sage advice in the mountain vernacular that was so enjoyed by those who loved him.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Becky; three children, Beth Cram (Paul), Fair Waggoner, and Cooper Nabers (Stephanie); seven grandchildren, Annabelle, Jake, Drake, Tucker, Wyatt, Hutson, and Nastia; two special nieces, Caroline and Lydia; and special grandnephew, Charlie, as well as four siblings, Alec, Sam, Charlie, and Ellen. He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Elizabeth and J.A. Nabers.
Memorials may be made to Bethel Wesleyan Church for the benefit of the Building Fund and The Lamb Orphanage in Honduras, two causes about which David was very passionate.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 3pm Saturday, June 8, 2019 at Bethel Wesleyan Church on Tracy Grove Road. Visitation will be from 1-3pm at the church.
