Carrie Belle Barton, native and lifelong resident of Hendersonville, passed away June 9, 2021 at Carolina Village Medical Center. She had been in declining health for many years. She was born April 27, 1933 to the late Charles H. and Edna McCrary Barton. She was also preceded in death by her brother-in-law, Harley Blackwell, in 2019.
As a young girl growing up in Shaws Creek Baptist Church, Carrie became a Christian and never wavered from her commitment and her desire to serve the Lord and others for a lifetime. She was a teacher in the Primary Department for many years and served as a department pianist as well. She was Director of Woman’s Missionary Union for over twenty-five years. At different times she served as Sunday School Director, church clerk, church secretary and on numerous committees. Carrie was active in the Carolina Baptist Association. She served as WMU Associational Director for four years, Associational Treasurer for four years, a Trustee for four years, and a member of several Associational Committees including the Associational Prayer team. In 2006 the Carolina Baptist Association Annual was dedicated in honor of Carrie.
Carrie was a 1951 graduate of Hendersonville High School where she was a member of the National Honor Society. Through the years she was on the planning committee for several reunions. She attended Gardner-Webb College. She was secretary at First Baptist Church for five years. After her employment at the Church, she went to work at First Union National Bank where she would serve in several capacities over the years: secretary to the city executive, commercial loan officer, branch manager and assistant vice-president. She retired in 1994 after thirty-seven years of service with the bank, now known as Well Fargo.
From 1981 to 1987 Carrie was privileged to serve as a Director for the Hendersonville Chamber of Commerce. She was actively involved with the first Farm-City Day held on Main Street. Carrie loved to travel and made many wonderful trips. She enjoyed playing her Technics keyboard and the piano. She was an avid reader of books. Most of all she loved horseback riding. She spent many happy times riding her beautiful horse, Rex.
Carrie is survived by her two sisters and best friends, Elizabeth Barton and Frances Blackwell. She is also survived by several special cousins and friends.
Elizabeth and Frances are grateful to all the members of the staff at Carolina Village Medical Center for their care of Carrie. Special appreciation to Jan Corn, Carrie’s CNA and friend for almost six years.
Memorials may be made to Shaws Creek Baptist Church and designated for North Carolina Baptist Children’s Homes. The church address is 91 Shaws Creek Church Road, Hendersonville, NC 28791.
Funeral services for Carrie will be Saturday, June 12, 2021 at 2pm at Shaws Creek Baptist Church. Rev. Todd Freeman, former pastor at Shaws Creek, will officiate. Visitation will follow in the Fellowship Hall. Following visitation, burial will take place in Oakdale Cemetery.
