Gifts & Memorial Donations

Alice Anthony Rowell, 97, a resident of Tore’s Home in East Flat Rock, NC, passed away in the early hours of September 7, 2019.

Alice was born to Tom and Myrtle Anthony in Mebane, NC, on February 7, 1922. Following graduation from Oak Grove High School in Durham she enrolled at Appalachian State Teacher’s College where she earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education. After her marriage to Evander Hoyt Rowell, the couple moved to Newport News, Virgina where they lived together with their two children until Hoyt’s death in 1969. At that time Alice earned a Master’s Degree in Elementary Education from The College of William and Mary and continued her teaching career until she retired from Newport News City Schools five years later. Soon after she relocated to her beloved mountains of Western NC, where she and Hoyt had purchased a site in anticipation of their eventual retirement. And there she lived happily and independently in her peaceful setting for the next thirty two years.

Alice was predeceased by her only sibling, Thomasine Anthony Neal, and is survived by her two children, Evander Hoyt Rowell, Jr. of Kanapolis and her daughter, Thomasine Rowell Snead and son-in-law, Charles Snead, of Hendersonville. She also leaves behind four granddaughters, five great grandsons and one great granddaughter, who embodied her hopes for the future.

Alice Anthony Rowell was a life- long Baptist and faithfully served Parkview Baptist Church in Newport News, VA and Black Mountain Baptist Church in Little Switzerland, NC. It was her lifetime commitment that all are created in God’s image and equally loved by Him.

At a later time she will be laid to rest in a private family graveside ceremony at Peninsula Memorial Park in Newport News, VA.

Shuler Funeral Home in Hendersonville, NC served the Rowell Family.
