Hendersonville-

Eleanor Fletcher Healy, 90, passed away on Wednesday, September 2, 2015 at Carolina Village Medical Center. Born and raised in Chicopee, MA to the late Lenore Austin Fletcher and Dr. Kenneth Steele Fletcher, III. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Grant Healy and her son, Grant F. Healy, M.D.

She graduated from Simmons College in 1946 with a Bachelor of Library Science. Eleanor met her husband, Grant S. Healy, her freshman year while attending Simmons College and they married in 1946. As Eleanor told the story it was May 1st, she was sitting outside with girlfriends and “this new, good looking fella was walking by with his friends– it was “love at first sight.” “

Eleanor’s family was all in New England. Her ties to childhood friends and family were strong but after moving to Hendersonville in 1952, Eleanor and Grant soon called Hendersonville, “home.” Both developed cherished friendships with neighbors and in the community and joined the United Methodist Church. They moved to Connecticut in the 1970s, returning home again after 8 years. Grant and Eleanor moved to Carolina Village in 1999. Grant passed away in 2002.

Eleanor worked as librarian, (in various capacities), in Springfield, Mass., Hendersonville, N.C. and Woodstock, CT. She was the children’s librarian for many years and briefly served as head librarian at the Henderson County Library. While living at Carolina Village, Eleanor directed the library there for a period of time. She was relentless in helping readers access the books and information they requested, but mostly, Eleanor loved to read. Working at the library meant that when the new books came in she would have the first view. When reading any suspense books, she’d read the last page first! Her other passions were card games and, of course, Tarheel basketball! Friends meant everything to Eleanor and Grant.

Eleanor is survived by her daughters, Priscilla Healy (her husband Scott F. Brown) of York Maine and Susan Healy (partner Debra Merrill) of Glenburn, Maine, daughter in law, Nancy Hoover Healy of Greenville, South Carolina, Eleanor’s grandchildren: Priscilla’s daughter, Rebecca White and Grant and Nancy’s two children, Alison and Matthew.

Our family wishes to thank Carolina Village Care staff for their professional, supportive and caring attention. “This is a nice place to be; we are lucky.” Thanks to Bea. Thank you to all who loved Eleanor and Grant.

A memorial service will be held on Monday, September 21 at 10:30 a.m. in the Magnolia Room at the Carolina Village Care Center. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Carolina Village Endowment Fund, 600 Carolina Village Road, Hendersonville, NC 28792 or First United Methodist Church, 204 6th Ave W, Hendersonville, NC 28739.
