What is the purpose of a funeral?
A funeral is an important step in the grieving process. It offers surviving family members and friends a caring, supportive environment in which to share thoughts and feelings about their loved one. The funeral identifies that a persons life has been lived, not that a death has occurred.
How can I personalize a funeral service?
The most common way to personalize a service is to bring in personal items to be displayed in or near the casket. For example, an avid golfer might have a favorite club placed in the casket; a musician may have his or her instrument displayed; an artist could have their work displayed. Also, feel free to bring in CDs or cassette tapes of favorite music. These selections don't have to be traditional hymns; they can be Big Band, Country, Rock, Jazz or whatever music you feel is appropriate.
Can I still have a funeral service if I choose cremation?
Yes. Cremation opens the doors to a number of different funeral options. From traditional services to contemporary celebrations, cremation gives you the flexibility to personalize the services for yourself or a loved one.
What should I bring to the when making arrangements?
Families should bring personal information for the deceased such as full name, date and place of birth, and social security number. Also bring all related paperwork such as insurance policies, veterans discharge papers, pre-arrangement forms and cemetery papers. The family may also bring in a photo to be used in the online and published obituary.
Is embalming required by law?
Except in certain cases, embalming is not required by law. Embalming may be necessary, however, if you select certain funeral arrangements, such as a funeral with viewing. If you do not want embalming, you usually have the right to choose an arrangement which does not require you to pay for it, such as cremation or immediate burial.
How much does Social Security pay toward funeral expenses?
Social Security pays a $255.00 death benefit to a surviving spouse or dependent child. The Funeral Home will notify the Social Security Administration for you.
What is a Natural or Green Burial?
Green burial, or natural burial, ensures the burial site remains as natural as possible in all respects. Interment is done in a bio-degradable casket, shroud, or a favorite blanket. Embalming and Burial Vaults are not permitted in most Natural or Green Cemeteries.
